This listing is for a PDF handknitting pattern. Accretion is a boomerang shawl, worked from the left tip to the right side. It uses a single skein of fingering weight yarn and, after the setup, features a very short repeat so it can easily be worked to whatever length your skein of yarn allows, whether it’s closer to 400 yards or 500 yards. The simple stockinette body and light edge details make it a perfect choice for that one skein of yarn that’s a little too busy to be used in many patterns, but is too pretty to just be worked into vanilla socks.

The design was inspired by “accretion disks,” or flat disks of gas and dust caused by material spiraling into the gravitational pull of a star or black hole. The strong curve of the shawl mimics the “tendex line” path matter travels through the accretion disk into the center of the celestial body.

Required skills: Knit stitch, purl stitch, cables, increases, holding stitches for later working
