Accretion disks are disks of high energy gas orbiting a massive star or a black hole. The material in the disk moves at extremely fast speeds, so friction between the gas particles causes them to heat up and emit radiation, giving them their orange glow.

This model is to make a mini accretion disk and supermassive black hole, with the swirly stripes representing the direction of the magnetic field.

The first section of the pattern starts with creating the black hole, which is a basic sphere in the round. Then the disk is worked flat using a rib stitch, which is then sewn into a tube then fixed onto the black hole.

The disk should fit in one hand, but doesn’t really need a gauge swatch or any specific tension. Just use what yarn you have and a appropriate hook!

In total, I used ~ 3g of black, ~ 10g of claret and ~10g of Spice.
