Macro lace and super bulky yarn combine for the perfect accessory to ease into winter. I’ve borrowed part of the species name of the big-leaf maple (acer macrophyllum) to reflect the leaves of the edge. This shawl won’t be as large as the tree, but it knits up quickly and it’ll keep you warm even while it’s a work in progress.

• 1 100cm/40-inch 12mm/ US #17 circular needle

This is a top-down triangular shawl, with greater rates of increase at the edges than the spine. The extraordinary size of the yarn makes it a quick (although somewhat athletic-feeling) knit. The gauge may be challenging; the next commonly available smaller needle size is 10mm/US #15 and the larger needle size is 15m/US #19. Unless your gauge varies extremely, I suggest knitting with the 12mm/US #17 needles. This pattern is fully written and charted, and for ease in knitting, the center spine and stitch markers are bolded in the written instructions. As well, there is a stitch count table to track your progress.

And be aware - you may well spend more time waiting for your shawl to finish drying after blocking it than you did knitting it!
