The pattern will take most of a skein of super bulky/chunky yarn (70-80 yards). I suggest solid or heather colors or only a very subtly variation in shade, or else the cables may not show very well.

This cap fit my husband and I (both with 22” heads) and also our 9 year old daughter, so fit is very flexible. If you want the cap to fit a small child or an unusually large adult head, it is easy to decrease or increase the number of pattern repeats, but you may have to re-configure your crown decreases.

Gauge is fairly important. If you knit very tightly or loosely, go up (or down) a needle size to get a better fit.
