Adalia Cowl
The Adalia Cowl features colorwork lady beetles, modeled after a color morph of the 10-spotted lady beetle, Adalia decempunctata. Many lady beetles are not the stereotypical red with black spots, and while the Adalia genus only includes 2 species, those 2 species make up nearly a dozen different color morphs! I’ve featured one of my favorite color morphs in this pattern, a predominantly black lady beetle with swirls for spots. The pattern includes instructions for making the cowl in both fingering and worsted weight yarns.
Fingering-weight version
Yarn:
-150(180) meters 165(196) yards of Color A (lady beetle and border color)
-150(180) meters 165(196) yards of Color B (background color)
Recommended needle: 3.0 mm (US Size 2.5) 18-20” circular needles
Gauge: 26 sts and 29 rows over 4” (10 cm) in colorwork stockinette, after blocking.
Instructions are provided for two sizes measuring 21.5”/55cm (25.8”/66cm) in circumference. Both sizes measure 10”/25 cm in height.
Worsted-weight version
Yarn:
-200(250) meters 220(275) yards of Color A (lady beetle and border color)
-200(250) meters 220(275) yards of Color B (background color)
Recommended needle: 3.75 mm (US Size 5) 18-20” circular needles
Gauge: 22 sts and 24 rows over 4” (10 cm) in colorwork stockinette, after blocking.
Instructions are provided for two sizes measuring 20.5”/52cm (25.5”/65cm) in circumference. Both sizes measure 12”/31 cm in height.
