I was lucky enough to stay in Shetland twice while I was living in Scotland in 2015. I was deeply inspired by the textile traditions and landscape there, and the people that shared them with me. I knit furiously on my travels that year, inspired by all the amazing places I was able to visit but there was one idea that took a little longer to gestate. Adrift finally came into being while I was living on Read Island the next year, a small island between the mainland and Vancouver Island. Inspired by my love of both of these tiny rocks, one covered in trees and the others almost tree-less, but both surrounded and shaped by the waves and water.

Adrift is an asymmetrical shawl; knit sideways on the bias in garter, with a large lace knitted-on edging. The edging incorporates two different modified shetland lace motifs that invoke water and waves.

Finished Dimensions:
78” (192cm) along top edge, 22” (56cm) deep.

Materials:
Yarn: 2 skeins of Yoth Mother (550 yds 503m, 100g, 100% Rambouillet wool) or 750 yds (686m) of similar heavy lace weight yarn. Sample shown in “Oyster”.
Needles: 4mm (US 6) or size required to obtain gauge.

Gauge:
14 sts and 40 rows = 4” (10cm) in garter stitch, after blocking.
