The main difference from other shawls is their shape, that reminds butterfly wings. Every shawl consists of 2 triangular side panels, a back gusset, border and shaped shoulders. Shoulder darts let the shawl drape beautifully and lie on shoulders steady even when you move, and you don’t need to use any pins! It’s such a pleasure to wear a Faroese shawl because of its form designed by knitters from Faroe islands.
Local people wore knit shawls as street clothes. Usually they were worked in garter stitch, that’s why they were reversible.
You could even work wearing this shawl, because the edges were long enough and one could tie them in a criss-cross manner on the back. The shawl was big enough to wear it on head when it was cold outside.
Natural shades of brown, black, grey, ice-cream and white colors were used more often. Some of the shawls had colored border.
But nowadays shawls have become a beautiful, lace accessory with more comfortable construction.
And I started to design Faroese shawls because I fell in love with its shape and construction. And there are so few designs of Faroese shawls!
