The Ahava Hat is named after the Hebrew word for love. It is inspired by all kinds of love that exist and the ways love can make a difference in our lives and the world we live in. Whether you’ve experienced the love of family, a deep friendship, romantic love, self-love, or love for the world around you ― each of these is essential and transformative to our growth as individuals at different points throughout our lives.

In 1977, Robert Indiana created a new version of his iconic pop-art LOVE sculpture, using the Hebrew word for love, AHAVA, in the same distinctive construction as his earlier works. The 12-foot-tall AHAVA sculpture was given as a gift to the Israel Museum in Jerusalem in the spirit of international brotherhood. Pictured below are his AHAVA sculpture in Jerusalem and his LOVE sculpture on Sixth Avenue in New York City.

This easy-to-knit hat begins at the brim with my favorite stretchy cast-on and features a simple repeat of knits and purls that is easy to memorize, making it a soothing project to indulge in. The hat makes for great social knitting if you’re a seasoned knitter and can be enjoyed by a beginner knitter since it only uses basic stitches.

HAT SIZE:
One size, to fit the average adult 21”-22”/53-56 cm head circumference

YARN:
Worsted Weight yarn in 1 color; approx. 150 yds/137 m

NEEDLES:
• US 8/5.0 mm 16”/40 cm circular needles (or size needed to obtain gauge)
• US 8/5.0 mm double-pointed needles (same size as the main needle)
• US 7/4.5 mm 16”/40 cm circular needles (one size smaller than the main needle)
Note: A long circular needle can also be used with the magic-loop method.

NOTIONS:
• Crochet hook same size as smaller needle
• Scrap yarn, smooth texture & similar weight to your working yarn, approx. 75”/190.5 cm
• Stitch Marker to indicate BOR
• Darning Needle

GAUGE:
20 sts and 26 rounds = 4”/10 cm
after blocking, using US 8/5.0 mm needles,
worked in pattern stitch in the round.
