Aideen is a top-down, crescent-shaped lace shawl with a subtly ruffled stockinette border finished with a picot edge. The shaping and blocking process combined enable the ends to spiral into soft curls.

When designing my shawls, I often pick a theme and work the stitch patterns around that concept. This time I decided to design Aideen based solely on my admiration for the beauty and interesting mathematical structure of the complimentary stitch patterns used in the body of the shawl. The lace pattern that graces the middle section of the body is called Candle of Glory. The name of the shawl refers to the pretty flame pattern, as Aideen is a Celtic name meaning flame. The graceful pattern used on the side wings of the body is a lovely old French stitch called Fleurette.

The Aideen pattern includes both charts and full written out instructions for those of you who prefer not to use charts.

While yardage and dimensions are provided for fingering weight, Aideen may be worked in any weight you choose. Solid or tonal yarn will show off the design to its best advantage.

Directions are included for the 72 x 20” (183 x 51 cm) pattern size, but may be easily customized by working more or fewer repeats of the main body chart. Detailed instructions about how to do that, including stitch counts for 4 other sizes, are included.

Also included are comprehensive instructions about how to block to the crescent shape using either string, flexible wires or weed wacker trimmer line.
