Inspired by my best friend, these mittens feature a twisting diamond-shaped cable. The mittens use seed stitch to add interest and texture inside of the diamonds and have a simple column-style cable running up each side of the hand. This pattern uses charts.
The finished size for the mitten pattern is 19cm / 7 ½“ (top of cuff to tip of fingers) X 8.5cm / 3 3/8” (at widest part of palm). Including the cuff, the total length measures 22.5cm / 9 ¾”. I have long, narrow hands! If you need a shorter mitten, start the thumb gusset further up the palm (so the bottom of the mitten ends up being part of the cuff). If you need a wider mitten, add a column of purl stitches on either side of the chart (you may have to play with the cuff ribbing to make it look right). You could also go up a needle size or two as these are very dense mittens. As for the cuff, I liked mine shorter; if you prefer more of your wrist to be covered, just add extra rows of ribbing.
You will need a set of 3.25mm (US size 3) double-pointed needles (I found that a set of five needles was better than four). You will also need a cable needle, a stitch holder, and a yarn needle.
Two skeins of Berroco Ultra Alpaca was enough to make the mittens with quite a bit left over. However, one skein is not enough unless you knit them single-stranded. I just found that double-stranded made for a denser, warmer mitten that doesn’t let the wind through!
