Akamas Lace crescent shawl
This beautiful, delicate shawl is knit in 2 parts. There is a garter stitch crescent, perfect for TV knitting, or when you need to relax, then a lace border (plain on the purl rows) for when you feel like concentrating on something more interesting. You then join the 2 pieces together as you cast off the garter stitch section.
I have made two shawls, both lace weight at 800 m (875 yds) per 100 g (3.5 oz), but the two yarns are quite different in character requiring different needle sizes as described below.
This pattern is based on the harebell lace from the Victorian lace knitting by Jane Sowerby. This is a pattern I have used and altered in many different ways, in lace weight yarn, and in aran wool.
Yarn
Angel mist: 70% Alpaca, 20% silk, 10% cashmere.
This is quite a fine yarn with a halo of fibres, but not fluffy exactly. It is soft, with a mat appearance and has a lovely drape, which could be described as limp rather than bouncy.
Needles: 3 mm (US 2.5) for garter crescent, 3.75 mm (US 5) for lace border.
Gauge: 21 sts x 64 rows = 10 cm (4”) square in grater stitch
Sample used 95 g, working 39 repeats of the lace border
The Lush lace: 80% merino with 20% silk. This is a very round yarn with character and bounce, it is clean and smooth with a lovely sheen from the silk.
Needles: 3.25 mm (US 3) for garter crescent, 4.5 mm (US 7) for lace border.
Gauge: 19 sts x 60 rows = 10 cm (4”) square in garter stitch
Sample used 97 g, working 33 repeats of the lace border
Size: wingspan 220 cm (86”), depth 50 cm (20”)
I have kits to make this shawl with the yarns, hand dyed as described above https://onlinewoolshow.com/stall.php?id=55
