This shawl is inspired by Faroese shawls, which feature a gusset in the middle and triangles on each side, with some shaping around the shoulders to help the shawl drape better. While traditional Faroese shawls are knit bottom-up, with a trapezoid-shaped gusset, I chose to make mine top-down with a rectangular gusset. This means that you start with a low number of stitches and increase until you reach the desired size (or run out of yarn).

All my patterns are using Calibri font size 13 in black on white, so they are accessible and easy to read on different screens and when printed. All abbreviations and acronyms are explained in the pattern.

Skills needed: knit, purl, provisional cast-on, yarn-over, knit 2 together, slip-slip-knit, pick up stitches on the side of a knitted piece.

You will get a document that includes:

  • Written instructions in English, using US, UK and metric measurements and needle sizes.
  • Chart of the lace repeat.
  • Photos explaining the anatomy of the shawl.
  • Instructions for 2 sizes depending on your shoulder width (S/M and L/XL) + tips for making it even larger.

Size

The way this shawl is constructed allows you to make it as long as you want. However, the shoulders are shaped, so it makes a difference whether you are knitting for someone with narrow or broad shoulders. So I have included instructions for two sizes (Small/Medium and Large/Extra-Large), as well as tips to make it even larger.

The shawl starts the same way for both of them, and you will be able to check whether it fits before deciding which size to make. Your gauge will also affect the size.

Recommended yarn

This project works well with Fine-weight or Sport-weight yarn. Plant-based yarns such as cotton or bamboo are the most suitable. For the shawl in the photos (which is size Small/Medium) I used one cotton cake of Hobbii Dahlia measuring a total of 800 m (875 yds). For a Large-sized shawl I estimate you will need about 1200 m (1320 yds) of yarn with similar weight.

Hobbii Dahlia is gradient yarn but the shawl should look nice with solid colors too.

Needles

Knitting needles size 3mm (US 3 / UK 11) or size needed to obtain the gauge. Keep in mind that this is supposed to be a loose knit, so avoid needles that are smaller than recommended on the yarn label.

I recommend circular needles of at least 100 cm (39 inches) long, or longer if you intend to make a larger shawl than the one in the photos.

Gauge: 24 stitches and 35 rows = 10 cm (4 inches)
The pattern includes instructions for knitting a swatch.
