Pattern no longer available
I’m pulling this pattern because (but leaving the page in place in case someone still chooses to knit it from a pattern s/he already has):
- the mesh fabric seems only to stay nicely open and airy when knitted with certain yarns (cashmere yes, wool no)
- while it’s a truly simple knit, the simplicity does not translate easily into clear instructions -- I’m not happy with my instructions
A sideways, airy shawl, knit in one piece
NOTE: the tip in the photos differs a little from the written pattern -- I didn’t like how the faggoting went up through the top edge, so I changed that part.
See below for tip on how to make the shawl wider.
- The shawl is knit from end to end in one piece, including border and edging
- Use the very last smidgen of yarn – on the so-called Baktus Principle: begin decreases when you’re half-way through your yarn – 400m-500m should suffice for a shawlette
- The pattern is charted but is easily memorised – the increases & decreases will also make sense without the charts, once you see how they are worked
- This is what I call a determined knit – the stitch pattern is very simple (a Barbara Walker version of the traditional Star Rib Mesh) but it is therefore also quite repetitive – but I do love the result
- Along the top a simple picot edging -- good for blocking
- Along the bottom, an airy faggoting column and a simple, very open, lacy edging
PATTERN NOTE:
To make the shawl wider more quickly, keep the every-2nd-row increases going by repeating the increases of rows 33, 35, 37, 39 -- and in that sequence.
In other words, on row 41, you make an increase as on row 33 (that is, add a YO after the green k2tog).
On row 43, make an increase as on row 35.
On row 45, make an increase as on row 37.
Etc.
