Alchemist Mitts
Introduction
The Alchemist Mitts are a perfect stashbuster which allows for a magical play of colors. This makes them fun and playful to knit.
The mittens are worked bottom-up (starting at the cuff) on a 25cm/9in circular needle. The pattern can be easily adapted to be knit using the magic loop method, or using double pointed needles.
On the cuff you can find a textured detail. Either you can work some purl rounds, or you can choose to make a Latvian Braid. Both options are included in the pattern.
Sizes
The Alchemist Mitts come in 2 sizes:
- S-M: mitten circumference of 18cm/7in
- L-XL: mitten circumference of 20cm/8in
Choose the size that matches best with the circumference of your hand. The length of the cuffs (at the wrist and at the fingers) is adjustable to your preference.
Yarn
Fingering weight yarn in five different colors. The sample mitts use a combination of:
- BC Garn Bio Shetland (100% wool, 280m/306yds for 50g/1,76oz): colors orange, pink and black
- Soft Knol Donegal Yarn (100% merino): colors yellow and blue, this yarn has a similar look and feel as the Shetland yarn, but is available in brighter colors. I bought mine at Bregina Tuinstra in the Netherlands.
The weight of two mittens is 30g/1.06oz (size S-M) or 40g/1.42oz (size L-XL). The main color (blue in the sample) requires 3/4th of the total yarn weight. Colors 2 – 5 require less than 10g/0.35 oz each.
Gauge
31 stitches x 44 rounds per 10 x 10cm / 4 x 4in in stockinette on 2.5mm needles (or needle size to obtain gauge with) after wet blocking.
