he oldest known houndstooth woven textile was discovered in Austria dating back to 1500-1200 BC, and a garment from 360-100 BC was found in Sweden. The name ‘houndstooth’ wasn’t coined until the mid-1930s. It was seen largely only in gun clubs until it was brought back to fashion in 2009. This is my take on an age-old design.

Notes
The design is created by working two panels multiple times. An uneven number of panels is recommended to bookend the pattern. The panels are worked on the diagonal.
The sample was made with a needle smaller than what the yarn calls for to create a slightly denser fabric. Feel free to use the needle of your choice to create a fabric to your liking. Adjusting needle size, increasing the repeats and / or the number of panels will affect the yardage used.

768 y (700 m) chunky weight yarn, 21 oz (600 g)

Size
Each panel = 7” (18 cm) wide x 24” (60 cm) length, working through pattern with no additional repeats
Three panels = 21” (54 cm) wide x 24” (60 cm) length

Needles & Notions
US 9 (5.5 mm) needles, or size to create fabric that makes you happy, or to get gauge
Locking stitch markers (optional)
Tapestry needle to sew in ends and sew panels together

Gauge
14 sts and 15 rows = 4” (10 cm) in garter stitch
Gauge is less critical than consistent tension.
