A sweater pattern inspired by textile finds from the Swedish Viking age city of Birka, rune stones and Scandinavian knitting traditions. It is our attempt at taking something ancient, something old and making it into something new.

This sweater is knitted in the round from the bottom up in the traditional Icelandic style, with Ístex Léttlopi yarn.

We want to create patterns that are easy to follow even for beginners. So we have listed all steps that you need to follow in bullet lists. This way you can easily track where you are and mark the steps you have completed.

(Tip: Pattern Colour 2 is in actuality less than one skein in all sizes. It is used to frame the main pattern, making it only 10 rounds in total. It could be a good idea to check in your leftover yarns before going out to get more.)

Knitting Needle Size
3.5 mm (US 4) and 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles 40 and 80 cm 3.5 mm and 4.5 mm double-pointed needles

Gauge
18 stitches and 24 rows = 10 x 10 cm in St st using 4.5 mm / 7 US needles. Check gauge and adjust needle size if necessary

We have only knitted this sweater in Léttlopi, but you could use any other wool yarn that corresponds with the gauge description of Léttlopi.
