ABOUT THIS PATTERN

Pattern available in English and Dutch.

Algorithmic Diva Bolero combines a number of different techniques, from knit and purl textures, to intarsia (no bobbins required!), to simple lacework, to make for a fun and challenging project for intermediate knitters that knits up quicker than expected. It is worked flat, sideways from one arm to the other, then stitched together along the ends to create the arms. This version of the bolero is fairly long, hitting at the thighs, dramatic and flowing. It uses a combination of 3 different yarns: 2-ply DK yarn, lace yarn and DK boucle yarn for a truly unique, funky, and fashion forward look. The design is my first collaboration with Berlin-based indie dyer Boredom Kills Design.

Algorithmic Diva Bolero is part of an ongoing series of knitting patterns integrating algorithmic computing and digital aesthetics with knitwear design, called Algorithmic Knitting Design. The patterns being developed under this moniker implement mainly standard, even basic techniques, but challenge the knitter with large, complex and non-repeating patterns. As knitters, I think it’s interesting to re-consider and re-contextualize our own craft and unique skill sets. The project strives to approach knitting as a form of applied science and mathematics, and takes advantage of your wonderful skills as a knitter, whether a beginner, intermediate, or master knitter. <3

Cellular automata are dynamic non-linear algorithms which create emergent textures that evolve over space and time. They are used to study complex processes in a variety of fields, including biology, chemistry, sociology, computer science, and more. This bolero takes its pattern from several such cellular automata, and was created in collaboration with artist and researcher Stelios Manousakis.

The bolero has a completely loose fit, drapes to the thigh, and has 7/8 to full length sleeves.

Finished dimensions (according to recommended gauge)
90cm / 35” (length) x 145cm / 57” (width)

GAUGE (Per 10 cm / 4” after blocking)
21 stitches x 28 rows in stockinette for Colors 1& 2, in lace pattern for Color 3

Gauge is not extremely critical, but DK or sport weight yarn is recommended for Colors 1 and 2 to obtain appropriate dimensions. For Colors 2 (in stockinette) and 3 (in lace pattern) it is important that the gauge is equal to, or lower than, the gauge for color 1 (i.e. 21 stitches or less and 28 rows or less per 10x10cm), using the same needles, for shaping purposes.

Needles
4.0mm / US 6 / UK 8 80cm/32” circular needles (or size to obtain gauge)

Recommended Yarns
Color 1: BKD Merino DK or other sportweight or DK yarn that obtains gauge.
Color 2: BKD Merino Boucle or other sportweight or DK boucle yarn that obtains gauge.
Color 3: BKD Kid Silk Lace or other laceweight yarn.

Yardage (Approx.)
Color 1: 400gr / 900m / 985yds
Color 2: 200gr / 440m / 480yds
Color 3: 15gr / 65m / 75yds
