This mystery knit-a-long (MKAL) will keep you engaged with intriguing texture, balanced with rhythmic stitches that allow you to create a knitting flow. And, you have a murder mystery novelette to accompany your knitting. Perfect combo, right?

This will be a triangle shaped shawl, knit from the bottom up, with three size options and two gauge options. You will receive a section of the knitting pattern along with a chapter of the mystery each week for four weeks.

All sections have written and charted directions. The directions for different sizes will need to be followed at the same time as working the charts for Sections 2-4.

Skills/Techniques:

  • Knitting
  • Purling
  • Knitted cast on (or Cable cast on)
  • Casting on new stitches at the beginning of the row
  • M1R and M1L (for sizes other than Small)
  • Simple cables
  • Slipping stitches
  • Binding off

Size After Blocking

  • Size 1 (2, 3)
  • For tighter gauge of 5 sts/inch: 32.25” tall and 50” (57.25”, 64.5”) wide
  • For looser gauge of 4.5 sts/inch: 36” tall and 57” (65”, 73”) wide
  • Your chosen edging and bind off method will change the finished height.

Materials

  • 600 (750, 900) yds of DK weight yarn. This could be all one yarn/color, or up to 4 yarns/colors.
  • 32” circular needle size US 6 (4.0mm), or needle to obtain gauge
  • 6-8 stitch markers: 2 designated Water Markers, 2 Sand Markers, 2 Fire Markers (sizes 2 and 3 will also need 2 designated Increase Markers)
  • cable needle (cables up to 4 sts wide, you can execute them without a cable needle if desired)
  • darning needle for weaving in ends
  • 1-3 blocking wires (optional)

Gauge Options

  • 20 sts and 30 rows = 4” in St st, after blocking, OR,
  • 18 sts and 26 rows = 4” in St st, after blocking
  • Please note that while gauge is not crucial for this object, a change in gauge will change the size of the object and possibly the amount of yarn needed.

Notes

  • You can use one color in each section, totaling four colors, or choose to make the entire piece in one color. The major design element to this project is texture; therefore, dark, variegated, or fluffy yarns will not show the texture as well.

  • When choosing size, you can measure another shawl you like to determine how many inches width you prefer for the wingspan. Or, you can have someone measure across your back, armpit to armpit or wrist to wrist. This will guide you to know if the project will wrap around your body.
