This pattern originally appeared in Knitter’s Magazine 33, Winter 1993, as ‘Gator Grin. The yardage amounts, gauge and needle sizes are from that design. A simplified version appears in this book, using only 4 colors and a slightly looser gauge and needle size. See the other patterns in the book for gauge and yardage requirements.

Yardage Requirements: Pattern uses 10-20 different colors of wool to achieve the shaded fair isle effect. Three sizes from S 38-40” to L 46-48” finished chest. Designer recommends buying 18-20 100 gram skeins of yarn in equal amounts of light & dark colors and varying them to make the sweater. There will be left over yarn. Featured project used just a few darker MC yarns and many different lighter background colors. Recommended yardage amount is an estimate using these parameters.

Yardage for the pattern as featured in the book:

  • 6 skeins MC (1000 yds. 2-ply)
  • 2 skeins each wine & scarlet CC’s (400 yds, each)
  • 1 skein MacRed accent color (200 yds. 2-ply)

Also needed: Seven 1” buttons
