Sideways oversized sweater
This quick, easy sweater, knit up in bulky, luxury yarn is a simple but elegant design.
Style elements include: boat neck, side vents, ¾ length sleeves, and 6 - 8 inches of positive ease. This sideways knit creates a very flattering drape.
Included in the pattern are photos, a complete list of abbreviations, a stitch glossary and schematic.
Skill level: intermediate.
Skills needed: knit, purl, SSK, M1, cable cast on, mattress stitch, picking up stitches or single crochet for neckline. All techniques are explained.
Substitute yarn: I recommend using a fiber that has some natural drape. Linen, rayon, bamboo, by themselves or blended together or possibly blended with a synthetic. Most 100% wools do not drape well, alpaca does. The baby alpaca yarn is a luxury yarn and will shed some because of the soft twist, but in exchange you get a soft, drapey yarn.
Sizes & yardage
Xtra small (28-30) 460yds
Small (32-34) 550yds
Med (36-38) 600yds
Large (40-42) 650yds
1X (44-46) 760yds
2X (48-50) 880yds
3X (52-54) 930yds
Pattern notes: The sweater is worked from cuff to cuff in stockinette stitch, with ribbing at the cuffs and horizontal ribbing at the bottom. The neck is finished with a row of single crochet or picked up stitches, knit and then bound off. Two pieces are knit, a front and back; seamed together for extra stability.
My inspiration
I wanted to design a sweater that would be easy enough for my sister who was the victim of a stroke to knit, but would also be elegant enough for her personal style. Beautiful sweaters are her trademark and she used to create complicated aran isle sweaters, while she was knitting them. For now, I’m hoping this simple design, knit in a bulky luxury yarn will fit the bill.
