No Sanderson book better represents Fall - in my opinion - than his Mistborn series for young adults. Between mistwraiths haunting the world of Scadriel; a Dark Lord whose magic has wreaked havoc and devastation across a barren, mist-cloaked landscape; and the mythical blending of chemistry and alchemy that is Allomancy, the Mistborn series begs to be read alongside the Gothic historicals that hallmark spooky season.

Mistborn is also the ideal place to start for any new-to-Sanderson (or even new to fantasy) readers, and the Allomancy Socks echo that immersion to new worlds…of sock knitting. A sampler of techniques, from toe to cuff they are designed to thoughtfully build your confidence with cable knitting and mosaic colorwork. From a striped colorwork toe that then incorporates soothing 1x1 cables that don’t require a cable needle, these two skills then combine in the Allomancy Mosaic colorwork leg. Also perfect for sock sets with 2 20-gram minis or stash-busing scraps so you can make identical or sister socks, there’s nothing these socks can’t do to add a little magic and whimsy to your knitting! The Allomancy Socks are a lovely way to ring in the transitional changes and color melting of Autumn.

Socks are cast on using Judy’s Magic Cast-on, then worked in the round from the toe up. They include a striped toe, 1x1 cabled “X’s” over the top of the foot and the leg, and a heel flap and gusset heel construction worked with short rows to eliminate gaps and no picking up of stitches, with a 1x1 ribbing on the cuff. Pattern features knits, simple 1x1 cables on the foot and leg, and, in combination with mosaic colorwork, as an intricate but easy to execute motif on the leg. Socks are worked using both in-the-round (toe, foot, leg, and cuff) and flat construction (heel flap) techniques. Socks are designed to maximize mini skeins, and may be knit identically, or as “sister socks”, i.e., keeping the MC the same and swapping CC1 and CC2. Instructions are written for Magic Loop, with a chart for the mosaic colorwork panel on the leg.

Pattern is written for 3 sizes: Small (56 sts), Medium (64 sts), and Large (72 sts).
