In chemistry, an allotrope refers to one of the different physical forms in which an element can exist. Just as a diamond’s beauty is revealed through the arrangement of carbon atoms, the beauty of a knitted sock is revealed through the patient arrangement of its stitches.

The pretty diamond-shaped stitch pattern of Allotrope socks reminds me of this seemingly magical process. Just as pressure shapes carbons into sparkly diamonds, the knitter’s hands shape humble sheep’s wool into cozy socks.

Allotrope Socks are knit cuff down with flap & gusset heel, but can easily be constructed toe-up with the heel of your choice.

The pattern is written specifically for magic loop, but is adaptable to your preferred method of knitting in the round.

Detailed instructions, particularly on heel construction, makes Allotrope a great project for beginning sock knitters.
