These mittens use 2 stitches I call an “X Post Single Crochet “(XPSc) and “Pi Post Single Crochet” (πPsc). They may be new stitches or just a “reinvention.” These stitches make a very thick and heavy fabric when crocheted with #4 yarn and a 4.5mm hook. However, it can also make a delicate thinner fabric when worked in a soft sock or lace yarn and a smaller hook. The XPSc and πPsc are variations of the Front Post Single Crochet. The fabric is almost like two layers of knitting, with vertical knit-like columns on the outside and horizontal knit-like rows on the inside.

These mittens start at the fingertips and work down toward the wrist. This allows you to test the fit as you go. It also means that the pattern adjusts to your gauge / yarn / hook.

A 4.5mm hook and #4 yarn makes a stiff and almost waterproof mitten, good for snowball fights. A 6.5mm hook and the same yarn makes a softer mitten, more suited for adult use.
