The same as the Along sweater, this hat is designed to be something that everyone can afford to knit, something that makes knitters think more creatively, and make their artwork. That’s why the hat is knit with affordable/ commercial yarn together with indie dyed yarn. I think that two darker colors as a blank canvas is a perfect base to play with colors, and stash.

Materials
Yarn: Bulky weight yarn. (Approximately 100m in 100g)

The hat is knitted with bulky weight yarn, but rather than knitting the hat out of one strand of bulky yarn, the bulky weight is achieved by holding 4 strands of fingering weight yarn together.
Two strands of darker color are carried throughout the hat and two strands are changing throughout the hat.

Note about changing yarn: When you are building your Along hat color palette try to focus on color, not yarn weights, because you can always hold two or three strands of yarn together. Play with darker and lighter colors to create shadows and highlights. Use scraps and when you run out of one color, replace it with another, and continue knitting. I recommend not to change more than two strands of yarn at one time, to keep the color flow. When changing colors, break your yarn and add in a new one, work one stitch and then hold one of your yarn tales with working threads and work a few stitches. In the next round when you have reached a place where you previously changed colors, add a second tale of yarn to your working yarns. This way you will eliminate weaving in thousands of yarn ends. Be creative and play with yarn, textures, colors, and yarn bases.

Here are additional yarn combinations to achieve bulky weight yarn for your hat-
4 strands of fingering/sock weight;
1 strand of aran/heavy worsted weight with 1 strand of fingering/sock/lace weight;
1 strand of DK weight with 2-3 strands of fingering/sock/lace weight;
1 strand of worsted weight with 2 strands of fingering/sock/lace weight;
1 strand of bulky weight.

Sample made from:
MC (carried throughout all hat (two strands)): “Cool Wool” from Performance. 75% superwash wool, 25% polyamide. 100g=400m. Color 236.

Yardage:
You will need approximately 138 (180) yards, 126 (165) m of each strand of yarn.

Yardage is stated for one strand of yarn. If you are knitting Along a hat with more strands held together, you will need stated yardage from all of your yarns. For example, if you are knitting a hat by holding 4 strands of fingering weight yarn together, then you will need stated yardage for each strand of yarn.

Yardage may vary if your gauge/yarn is different.

Needles: US #8 / 5 mm DPNs or circular for magic loop.
Or as required to meet gauge.
Gauge: 18 st & 22 rounds to 4” (10cm) in 2X1 rib, knit in the round, after blocking.
Other notions: stitch markers, darning needle.
