This pattern is a lovely way to use handspun yarn to create your very own special alpaca!

Approximately 8 inches tall

Materials

Yarn A: 15 yards / 13 meters 255 YPP yarn (2-ply, 100% Suri Alpaca); cream – 14 g

Yarn B: 15 yards / 13 meters 255 YPP yarn (2-ply, 100% Suri Alpaca); brown – 18 g

Yarn C: 22 yards / 27 meters 175 YPP yarn (100% boucle Suri Alpaca); cream–40 g

Remnants of pink yarn of a similar thickness, for cheeks

Optional: remnants of purple, blue, green and light green yarns for saddle, approximately 1 yds/ 1 meters each – 4 g

— 2.3–2.5mm crochet hook

— 2 x 12 mm safety eyes

— Black and white embroidery floss

— Tapestry needle, sewing needle

— Stitch markers

— Small pom-pom maker or small fork – pom poms should be about 1 cm/half an inch in diameter.

— Wool roving or fiberfill for stuffing

Gauge

6 stitches and 6 rows to 4 inches over stitch pattern

Working to precise gauge is not required, but note that working at a different gauge will affect yarn usage, and the size of the finished project. The fabric should be sufficiently dense that the stuffing does not come out.

Special Abbreviations

ch – chain

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

sl st – slip stitch

inc – increase – work 2 sc into the same stitch

dec – invisible decrease – use the tip of the crochet hook to pick up the front loop of both of the next 2 stitches; 3 loops on the hook; draw up the yarn and pull it through the first two loops, then draw up a loop again and pull it through the remaining two loops on the hook

Notes

For convenience, mark the first single crochet with pin or marker at the beginning of each round. Check the number of loops after each crocheted round.

If you choose a different yarn than suggested here, choose the appropriate size of hook for the yarn.

For a jogless and clean color change, work as follows: Make a slip knot with the new color yarn. When working the last stitch of the round prior to the change and all stitches of the next round, work the first half of the first stitch of the round with the old color, and the second half of the first stitch with the new. Once that round is complete, you can cut the old color.
