Who says being spineless is a bad thing? This is a style of invertebrate shawl is made with what I call “hypotenuse” construction. You cast on along the neck edge (i.e. the “hypotenuse”) and decrease to the center point, so the rows get shorter—and since you knit the edging at the same time, you’re done when you’re done!

Yarn used in the shawl shown at right is Malabrigo Lace {100% merino wool—color Verde Adriana—470 yards per 1.76 oz. (430 meters per 50g), approximately 1.25 skeins.

You can change the size by adding stitches in increments of 32. This shawl fits me comfortably, but my neck is on the small side. If your neck size is larger than 16 (US) in button-down shirts, I’d recommend adding at least one group of 32 stitches so it will stay on properly.
