Hiking from inn to inn through the Swiss Alps one summer, I was under-provisioned: not enough woolen accessories! (It’s colder in the mountains, who knew? ) And we were spending the nights in nice little mountain towns, so I didn’t want to just wear my same hiking stuff in the evening. This is just what I needed: an Alpine Cozy to wear as a hat by day and a cowl by night.
Keep the Alpine Cozy’s drawstring loose to wear it as a neck warmer; tighten it up to make it a hat! Stick your ponytail out or cinch the hat closed tight - so many options!
The pattern includes child and adult sizing. Using aran-weight yarn and mostly stockinette stitch, this is a quick knit.
Sizes
Child size has a 16”/ 40 cm circumference and is 7”/ 17.5 cm high.
Adult size has a 20”/ 50 cm circumference and is 10”/ 25 cm high
Gauge: 18 stitches and 24 rows = 4”/ 10 cm in stockinette stitch
Yarn: You will need approximately 75 (90) grams aran-weight yarn in the main color, plus a few grams contrast color for the pompoms.
Yarn used for sample: Pancake and Lulu PLY Aran in “Lobster Bisque.”
Needles: US #8 and 7 / 5.0/ 4.5 mm, or size needed to achieve gauge plus one size smaller. This hat is worked in the round. A 16”/ 40 cm circular needle was used for the adult-sized sample.
Other tools/ notions: Stitch marker for beginning of round and a second, different one. Yarn needle. Crochet hook size H/8 (5 mm), used just to make the drawstring; crochet skills not required.
Skills required: knit, purl, k2tog, ssk, yo, psso. The drawstring is a crochet chain but there are instructions in the pattern on how to do this if you aren’t familiar (really easy!); crochet skills are not required.
Pattern support: Designer email is included in the pattern in case you have questions.
