Alpine Huts Beanie - slip-stitch colorwork hat
This alpine huts beanie pattern was inspired by the unique mountain huts in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park in the Mackenzie region of New Zealand. The ‘windows’ of colour created by the slip-stitch/mosaic colorwork technique reminded me of the glimpses of colour you see through the hut windows.
It is written with Lion Brand Thick & Quick in mind, but works well with other super bulky yarns and looks absolutely stunning in kettle-dyed merino such as Malabrigo Rasta.
It is a super quick knit and a great introduction to mosaic / slip-stitch colorwork. It uses only basic stitches, so is great for beginners.
This pattern is fun to knit and a good stash buster as you can use up scraps of yarn for different colour bands - try 1-2 bands of each colour or alternating colours. Choosing colours that contrast well with your main colour tends to produce more dramatic results.
Method
Knit in the round, bottom up. Mosaic / slipstitch colorwork.
