With this hat, I wanted to write a colorwork pattern that really showed off a long-striping yarn- I think I’ve caught the Spincycle bug! If you’re looking for a more affordable alternative to Spincycle (I think that there are very good reasons behind their prices, but also want to recognize that not everyone can spend that much on yarn), Knit Picks Chroma Fingering, Crazy Zauberball, and Silk Garden Sock (and many other Noro yarns) make long stripes and have a range of price points.

Size: 17” circumference unstretched and about 8.5” from brim to crown. Fitted on a 22” head, easily covers ears but not slouchy.
Yarn: 2 colors of fingering or sport weight yarn. You will need about 180 yds of MC for a folded brim or about 120 and 70 yds of CC. Sample used Magpie Fibers Domestic Fingering for MC and Spincycle Yarns Dyed in the Wool for CC.
Suggested Needles: Size US 2 (2.75 mm) circular needle 16” (40 cm) long for ribbing and size US 4 (3.5 mm) 16” circular needle and set of DPNS for crown shaping. I tend to be a tight knitter -- you may need to go down a needle size!
Gauge: 30 sts & 36 rows = 4 in/10 cm in stranded colorwork
Notions: Scissors, tapestry needle.
Techniques Used: knit, purl, stranded colorwork, sk2p.
