This is the alpine Stitch, done in the round, as you’d do a standard granny square.

It creates a gorgeous offset ripple to the block. It can be used as part of a garment or blanket. Or made larger as one piece in itself. It is a yarn hog and it very dense in feel, so a blanket would be heavy, albeit beautiful.
