Alsacian Scallops Mittens & Scarf
About The Design:
The motif in the scarf and mittens is a slightly adapted version of a counterpane motif in Mary Walker Phillips’ Knitting Counterpanes. I am glad Mary included it in her collection, as it’s a lovely, sculptural motif.
The scarf is made from two panels that are grafted (Kitchener Stitch) at the center.
The mittens were a natural accompaniment to the scarf. The thumb gussets are on the palm, for maximum hand movement, and more ease throughout the hand.
The yarn I chose to use is produced by a small cooperative of sheep farmers in West Virginia – Helvetia Shepherds Association. Settled by Swiss and German immigrants in 1869, many descendants in Helvetia carry on the crafts of their forebears.
This yarn is natural and rich with lanolin. I have chosen to briefly pre-wash the yarn prior to knitting, which keeps some lanolin in the yarn, but fluffs it up enough for easier knitting.
