With the overwhelming response to the free Slip-Stitch Sole formula pattern, I knew I had to write up a fully written and charted pattern to make creating reinforced socks even easier. These beautifully textured socks are the result. I’ve combined all the details of knitting a slip-stitch sole sock with a simple knit and purl texture across the instep. This project is designed for those who are extra hard on their socks, and once you give it a try it will become your go-to hard-wearing sock pattern.

The instructions are written for magic loop knitting using needles with a long cable. Knitting this pattern with double-pointed needles is possible if you prefer.

SOCK DETAILS & CONSTRUCTION:

This sock is knit from cuff to toe, beginning with 2x2 ribbing. The leg and instep feature an 8-row knit and purl texture repeat that is easy to memorize. The textured pattern continues down the instep to the toe for a beautiful finish.

SIZES:

This pattern is written for adults and includes two heel flap lengths: standard heel flap (long heel flap).

Sample shown: Right foot modeling standard heel flap. Left foot modeling long heel flap.

YARN:

Fingering/sock weight

The sample used Imperial Yarn, McKenzie (fingering/sock; 100% premium wool, 220 yds/201 m/50 g). 2 skeins in Montana Sky.

GAUGE:

36 sts and 58 rnds = 4”/10 cm in main stitch pattern.

NEEDLES & NOTIONS:

  • US 1 (2.25 mm) 40” (102 cm) circular needle or 2-16”+ circular needles (or size needed to get gauge)

  • 3 stitch markers, including 1 unique for marking beginning of round

  • Row counter (recommended)

  • Tapestry needle
