Alternating Current Flip-top mitts
If you like the flexibility of a convertible mitt but not the fiddly buttons and flaps on traditional patterns, these are the mitts for you. The flip top is seamed to the mitt at the sides and simply folds forward or back to change from mitts to mittens in one easy step. Short row shaping builds in the extra length needed to accommodate the longer middle fingers.
One size, to fit most adult hands. The ribbing is stretchy so will fit a hand circumference from around 7” to 9”/18cm to 23cm. The length is adjustable to fit the individual hand but suggested lengths are given. Sizing can also be adjusted by using a smaller or larger needle.
You will need around 150 yards of fingering weight yarn in Main Colour and around 50 yards in Contrast Colour (or around 200 yards of fingering weight yarn in one colour to make single colour mitts), knitting needles for working in the round in sizes 2.5mm (US 1.5) and 3.25mm (US 3) (or size needed to achieve pattern tension), and a darning needle. You will also need a short length (a few inches) of smooth waste yarn, preferably in a contrasting colour.
You will need to be able to: work in the round, pick up stitches, work wrap-and-turn, basic seaming for attaching flip top.
