Always Collection
This three pattern collection features a cowl, toque and pair of fingerless mittens. These patterns use the same yarn; however, you will hold two strands of DK weight (double) for the cowl, while for the hat and mitts, you will hold one strand of DK (single). They all feature a twisted traveling stitch pattern which was adapted from the Always chart found in the Twisted Stitch Sourcebook by Norah Gaughan.
The cowl is knit from the top down, with a twisted stitch panel running down the centre front. Once the appropriate length is reached, the cowl bib is extended using short rows. A unique method of short rows is used so that the cowl bib lays flat and does not curve in. The pattern utilizes yarns held double at a gauge that allows the accessory to stand up by itself.
This toque (that’s Canadian for “winter hat”) is knit from the bottom up, with a twisted stitch panel running up the centre front. The panel is continued up the length of the hat, with two-by-two ribbing making up the rest of the accessory.
The fingerless mitts are knit from the bottom up, beginning with ribbing and a twisted stitch panel. The panel is continued through the stockinette wrist, while the thumb gusset is increased and thumb stitches are put on hold. The hand is continued for a short length before ending in ribbing. The thumb is picked up and also finished in ribbing.
