Amadea (adjective, ah-mah-dā-ah, Latin word for beloved)

Knit design is what I do, but it is not who I am. As part of a collection of designs based on the theme Identity, I was challenged to define where my identity comes from. The Bible tells me that I can find my identity in the One who created me, the God of the universe, He who calls me beloved. God made me, He gifted me with creativity, and I express that creativity back to Him in yarn of many colors. This lacey wrap and scarf are worked in Trendsetter’s Evolution, a soft spun merino single that starts out variegated, changes to solid, and morphs into a different solid all in one beautiful yarn cake. With its textural stitch pattern and next-to-the-skin softness, this might just be your next beloved project.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Required Skills: Cast on, knit, purl, increases, decreases, grafting or 3-needle bind off.
Two versions: Wrap (Scarf). Instructions for the wrap are given first followed by instructions for the scarf in parentheses.
Finished Measurements: Wrap 68”/173cm length by 15.5”/39cm width (Scarf 88”/224cm length by 13”/33cm width)
Gauge: 23 sts and 27 rows = 4” / 10cm in stockinette stitch; one pattern repeat over 10 sts measures 2 1/8” / 5.4cm. Gauge is not critical for this project but a different gauge will affect yarn requirements and size of finished piece. Take time to check gauge. After working a gauge swatch, do not cut yarn. Block it, measure it, then unravel it to reclaim the yarn.

Materials:
Yarn: Sport weight smooth yarn; 970 yards / 860m. Models shown in Trendsetter Evolution (100% merino wool, 490 yds per 150g cake), 2 cakes, wrap in color #4 Wine Embers, scarf in color #3 Green Day
Needles: US 7 / 4.5mm straight or circular needles, or size needed to obtain gauge, and a spare needle for 3-needle bind off
Crochet hook size G / 4.5mm for crochet cast on (optional)
Yarn needle
2 stitch markers

Notes: Project is worked in two sections that are joined together with either a 3-needle bind off or by grafting in Kitchener stitch. The lace stitch pattern is surrounded by broken rib selvedges to prevent the edges from curling.

Alternate construction method:
If you don’t mind the stitch pattern being inverted on half of the piece, you can avoid the center join by working the first half from the outside of the yarn cake until it runs out, then continue working with the second cake from the center pull end. Place locking stitch markers at the place where the second yarn cake is joined, and pay attention to the number of stitch pattern repeats so you will know when to begin working the final border. Work that border in the same manner as the first border.
