The gauge varies between the needles for the skirt but the ribbing makes it pretty well fitted for the rest.
I think other scarf yarns might work but do let me know if you try them!
It’s fun and pretty easy and then she ready to cha-cha with the Stars!
I have added a new photo showing original cast on. It’s just pulling lops though the yarn band of the fabric “yarn” ruffle. You could use a hook to do this if it is easier for you.
