I named this winter cowl after Fort Amherst, a small neighbourhood consisting of just a few family homes, military ruins from WWII, and a lighthouse that greets the cold North Atlantic. I remember standing there as a teenager, in the dead of winter, burying my face in my jacket as the wind whipped up from the sea, making my eyelashes freeze together.

No longer living by the sea, I made Amherst as a practical knitted response to living in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies where temperatures can fall as low as -35C. As an avid walker, I needed something simple and extra warm, without being fussy. The long turtleneck can fold down or be pulled up across the face, and flat panels at the front and back ensure your torso is toasty without needing to add another layer under your coat. Worked seamlessly in the round in a pleasant 1x1 rib, Amherst is the ideal accessory for anyone living in subzero winter climates.
