The Ammonoid Cowl is worked flat from side to side, starting with the short-row spiral. Neat i-cord edges hide the contrasting colour when it is carried along; the ends of the cowl are joined with a short diagonal seam in the front.

Skills required
Most of the cowl is knit flat in garter stitch (yes, there are only three purl stitches in the entire project!). Several ways of slipping and picking up stitches, and simple types of increases and decreases are used for shaping and to create the contrasting eyelet bands.

The spiral beginning will require your full attention to keep track of the rows, but there are no difficult techniques involved. Photo tutorials and detailed instructions for all special features are included.
