Ammonoid is an intricate looking yet relatively easy to knit shawl made with two yarns. It is fully reversible. You will need two contrasting yarns of the same weight: two solids, one solid or semi solid combined with a color gradient, or two color gradients that go well together as a pair but that are distinctive enough to make out the individual modules – all these combinations work well together.
You will need about twice as much yarn of Yarn B as of Yarn A. Simply start knitting and either knit until you run out of yarn or until you have reached the desired length. You can use any yarn weight you like as the gauge is not important.
The amount of yarn you need will of course depend on the tightness of your knitting and the weight of your yarn. The size will depend on the numer of modules you want to knit. I knitted one model with Picktheyarn Aturu and I used 385y/350m of Yarn A and 820y/750 of Yarn B (depth: 16”/41cm - length 69”/175m). I knitted another model with Schoppel Wool Finest Denim as Yarn A (440y/400m) and Louisa Harding Amitola No. 131 as Yarn B (820y/750m) - length: 65”/165cm - depth 16”/41cm.
Ammonoid is a modular knit but there is no seaming involved as you will join all the modules as you go. You will find photo tutorials on all the necessary techniques for joining the modules.
The general principle is fairly easy and you won’t have to look at the instructions once you have knitted the first few modules. However all instructions are given in written and charted form in case you want to refer to them.
This makes Ammonoid a doable project for most knitters.
