After brewing – uh, knitting – myself some Felix Felicis as part of my Hogwarts Library Collection, I really got a taste for potions. And as I was thinking of more types to make, it was getting close to Valentine’s Day… So how about some Amortentia? It’s a very powerful love potion, and even if you don’t need any, this sparkly and frothy shawlette in love-y colors is just too cute to pass up! Had Romilda Vane worn it instead of trying to sneak people potion-filled chocolates, she might have had more success attracting attention…

The knit-and-purl pattern sequence in this shawlette reminds me of random bubbling liquid in your cauldron and is pretty from both sides. The mohair makes things extra frothy! And if you’d like a larger shawl, you can keep going if you have extra yarn.

About the pattern:
Amortentia is a pattern suitable for advanced beginners who want to experiment with mohair or other fluffy yarns, and it’s a great project to practice M1R and M1L. The piece is similar to Felix Felicis, but is a heart shaped rather than semi-circular shawlette or shawl (the size is fully adjustable); it is worked in a straightforward knit-purl sequence pattern from the center out, and ends with a frothy picot border worked only with the contrast yarn.

Materials:
400 yds of Fingering weight yarn (MC)
310 yds of Lace weight mohair or other fluffy yarn (CC)

Used for the sample:
1 skein of Knitted Wit Pixie Plied (about 113g / 400 yds) in color “Be Mine” (MC),
2 balls of KnitPicks Aloft (25g / 260 yds) in color “Blush” (CC)

Size 3mm / US 2.5, 32” or longer circular needle
Stitch markers, darning needle

Finished Measurements: About 51” along the top edge, 19” deep at center (after blocking)

Gauge: About 22-24 sts = 4” / 10cm in stockinette, but not crucial for this project.

Suggested alternative yarns: Knitted Wit Victory Fingering, Tosh Sock, Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks that Rock Lightweight, Fiddle Knits Polka Sock, Hedgehog Fibers Sock, Dragonfly Fibers Djinni Sock
