Anakie
Anakie is a shawl that is an exercise in exploration. It plays around with short rows to create an asymmetrical shallow shawl full of stripes, garter stitch movement and angles; a glorious interplay of solids and stripes in an unconventional manner. Knit in 8ply/DK weight yarn, Anakie knits up quickly into a snuggly easy-to-wear accessory that is both a delight to knit and wear. Anakie uses German short rows but your preferred method can easily be substituted.
Anakie is named for a tiny town on the outskirts of Geelong. I’ve always been attracted to the play on words in the place name and have fancily imagined a town ruled by disorder and chaos (some of the scenes from Mad Max were shot there). This is not the case. Anakie is, however, derived from a local Wathaurong expression “anakie young” meaning little hill.
Construction:
This is an asymmetrical shawl worked from edge to edge. It begins with a small number of stitches. Increases and decreases are used to create the shape of the shawl as it expands in width. Short rows are used to create movement and interest throughout the shawl.
