Kente cloth is a brightly colored fabric that originates from the Ashanti Kingdom of Ghana. The intricate patterns and vibrant colors of Kente cloth have made it an iconic symbol of African culture and tradition. According to Ashanti folklore, the art of weaving Kente cloth was taught to humans by a spider named Anansi. The story goes that Anansi was once a beloved messenger of the sky god Nyame, who gifted him with the knowledge of weaving.

There are many stories of Anansi; and a favorite of my son’s was Anansi the spider, a tale from the Ashanti (adapted and illustrated by Gerald McDermott). A fable about a rogue, mischief maker; and a wise, lovable creature who triumphs over larger foes with the help of his six sons. Anansi is the inspiration for this FREE color work chart. Combine the chart with any vanilla DK-weight sock pattern to create your own pair of Kente-inspired socks. It would be great for mitts too! The chart is a multiple of 6 sts, so use a pattern with stitch counts of 42 sts, 48 sts, 54 sts, etc; any other stitch count will require increasing/decreasing stitches before and after the colorwork. Enjoy!

I used Knitted Wit Double Bubbles, but this is a great opportunity to use up leftover bits of yarn. My main color was Swans Island DK in Midnight.
