And a Scrap-Free New Year Cardigan
The And a Scrap-Free New Year Cardigan is an open, shawl collar cardigan meant to celebrate all of your scraps and help you clear your stash!
This sweater is knit bottom up, flat, and split at the underarm. Then the front and back panels are worked and the shoulders are seamed together using 3 Needle Bindoff. The sleeves are then picked up and knit in the round. Finally, the border and shawl collar are picked up and knit along the selvedge edge.

If you are between sizes, I would recommend choosing the larger size or the size with your desired amount of ease/sleeve circumference/yoke depth.
Suggested Yarn: The sample was knit using various scrap yarns and used two strands of fingering weight held together with a strand of mohair throughout the entire sweater.
The following yarn weight combinations could work for the gauge required:
Lace x5
Lace x3 + Fingering
Fingering x2 + Lace
DK + Lace
Worsted
Note on choosing colors: This design will work well with any color combination, but if you’d like the chevron motif to stand out more, lighter colors and less frequent color changes will help with that.
Yardage: Total yardage estimates for two strands of fingering weight held together with lace: 2304 (2520, 2771, 3049, 3279) (3607, 3886, 4225, 4532) yds/2107 (2304, 2534, 2788, 2998) (3298, 3553, 3891, 4144) m.
Total yardage estimates for two strands of fingering weight: 1536 (1680, 1847, 2033, 2186) (2404, 2591, 2817, 3021) yds/ 1405 (1536, 1689, 1859, 1999) (2198, 2369, 2576, 2762) m.
Total yardage estimates for lace: 768 (840, 924, 1016, 1093) (1202, 1295, 1408, 1511) yds/ 702 (768, 845, 929, 999) (1099, 1184, 1287, 1382) m.
This includes additional yardage for swatching.
Gauge: 16 sts x 24 rows/rounds = 4x4”/10x10 cm in chevron pattern, worked flat/in the round and blocked.
Suggested Needles:
Body needle: US 7/4.5 mm circular needles and/or DPNs, or needles needed to obtain gauge. When knitting the i cord edging around the border, all border stitches will be on the needle at once, so you’ll want to use a circular needle with a lengthy cord. I would suggest a 30-50”/ 75-125 cm cord.
Arm needle (optional): US 8/5 mm circular needles and/or DPNs, or needles needed to obtain gauge.
Materials: Stitch markers, spare circular needle or scrap yarn, tapestry needle.
Techniques: You will need to know how to knit, purl, knit in the round, slip slip knit, knit 2 together, slip slip purl, purl 2 together, and pick up and knit.
