Anfractuous
Anfractuous is an old-fashioned word that means twisting and turning but not breaking. This can be the sinuous meander of a river, a circuitous path through the woods, or winding hairpin turns along a mountain road.
True to their name, these complex and layered cables wind and cross, strengthening and thickening the fabric of the sweater and forming its seams, but they never break.
Sizing Info:
Like all of my patterns, Anfractuous is #sizeinclusive and has no upper or lower size limits. It’s custom-fit to your unique measurements.
The pattern comes with a spreadsheet file that completes all custom calculations for you using 4 of your body measurements (in inches). It can be knit to a cropped length, tunic length, and everywhere in between.
Gauge and Yarn information
Precise gauge of 8 stitches and 12 rows per 2” with any aran or light bulky weight yarn is critical for this pattern.
Non-superwash wool yarn is highly recommended.
Yardage Required
As so many pieces of this sweater are customizable to your measurements, precise yardage recommendations are challenging to give. However, use the following chart as a guide. The amounts below are for a sweater that is 17 inches from underarm to hem.
Yardage for a gauge swatch is also included in the estimates below.
For reference, the sample sweaters pictured are 14-17 inches in length.
30” actual bust/chest measurement - 500 yards required (260 main and 240 contrast)
34” - 665 yards (370 main, 295 contrast)
38” - 830 yards (480 main, 350 contrast)
42” - 995 yards (590 main, 405 contrast)
46” - 1160 yards (700 main, 460 contrast)
50” - 1325 yards (810 main, 515 contrast)
54” - 1490 yards (920 main, 570 contrast)
58” - 1655 yards (1030 main, 625 contrast)
62” - 1820 yards (1140 main, 680 contrast)
Pattern Customization
Pattern purchase includes both PDF instructions with charted and text cable pattern and the accompanying spreadsheet. The spreadsheet asks for 4 of your unique body measurements, presents a range of length options to choose from, and then calculates the rest of your pattern accordingly!
Depending on your unique measurements and which length sweater you choose, you’ll wind up with one of many variations on the cable motif for a truly custom sweater!
The spreadsheet can be used in either Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets (free). It is formatted in such a way that it can be easily printed after your measurements are input.
Swanky Emu Knits design philosophy
I’ve had to modify every single garment I’ve ever knitted for myself. I know plenty of people who look like me, but my body is larger or differently proportioned than most knitting patterns seem to call for.
I create size-inclusive instructions to ensure my patterns work for absolutely every body size and shape, no matter what.
And I build this into the framework of the design rather than add it later.
Everyone deserves to wear something that is both tailored to their shape and that makes them look and feel amazing.
