Angelus Novus Shawl
The Klee Collection
The Klee Collection is a gathering of knitting patterns close to my heart. Although I trained as an art historian, I rarely
get a chance to see even a fraction of the amazing art on offer in London. A few years ago the Tate Modern held an
exhibition of Paul Klee’s work and it was like visiting an old friend. The inspiration to design my first collection came
quickly and I have named each of the designs after a painting by Klee.
Angelus Novus Shawl
The Angelus Novus shawl is a generously-sized, top-down triangular shawl worked in a heavy DK yarn for a quick and
satisfying knit. The sample is worked in beautiful Blacker Swan Falkland Islands Wool, which is a thick DK weight, but a worsted- or even aran-weight yarn would also be great. The shawl is the accessory partner to the Angelus Novus cardigan.
Information for a lace-weight version has been added to the original pattern. The striped example is in Kettle Yarn Co. Beyul lace in a lighter and darker natural shades.
YARN
Blacker Swan DK (100% Superwash Falkland Islands Wool; 119 yd/110 m per 50 g ball) in colorway Stone; 7
balls. 833 yd/770 m
Note: The Blacker Swan DK is a very thick DK. If substituting yarns, consider a heavy worsted or even aran-weight
yarn for a similar density of fabric, or a DK for a looser fabric with more drape.
NEEDLES
US #9/5.5 mm or size needed to obtain gauge. I used a long circular needle to accommodate all the sts.
NOTIONS
Waste yarn, tapestry needle, 4 stitch markers.
The sample shawl is very large, but it is very easy to make it smaller (or even larger!) by simply knitting more or fewer repeats.
Errata:
There is no double yarnover to knit and purl on Row 10.
It should read:
Row 10 and all even rows without a double yarnover: K3, SM, purl to marker, SM, k3, SM, purl to marker, SM, k3.
Row 16 and all rows with a double yarnover: K3, SM, purl to double yo, drop one yo and p1, k1 into the remaining yo, purl to marker, SM, k3, SM, purl to double yo, drop one yo and p1, k1 into the remaining yo, purl to marker, SM, k3.
