Angwin
Dense, rhythmic cables in a geometric layout adorn the fronts and back of this opulently cabled cardigan, a modern, tailored riff on a knitterly classic: the densely cabled winter-white sweater. Angwin takes a simple idea—the 2-over-2 cable—and uses it to create a bold, graphic allover texture. Here, multi-step cables add drama without a great deal of height or bulk, which keeps the sweater flattering and easy to wear, whether with jeans on the weekend or dressed up for the office. Woolfolk’s amazing cable-spun TOV yarn has an airiness that yields wonderful drape and keeps even this heavily patterned sweater from being too weighty, while its subtle sheen and traffic-stopping stitch definition means you can see these cables from across the room—or maybe even across town. Let the stitch patterning speak for itself in a light neutral like an off-white or natural gray, add drama and sophistication in black or navy, or make a fun-loving, brightly colored version in a subtly-variegated shade. Tailored shoulders make for a flattering seam placement and easy finishing, while a bold, deep collar makes you feel like you’re wearing a very knitterly hug, and afterthought pockets add a fun, practical detail. Worked from the bottom up in pieces and seamed in an aran-weight yarn, it’s a surprisingly quick knit that yields a dramatic finished product.
Size
XS (S, M, L, XL, XXL, XXXL), finished bust measurements (with fronts touching) 35.5 (38.5, 43.5, 46.5, 51.5, 54.5, 59.5)” / 90 (98, 110.5, 118, 131, 138.5, 151) cm. Sample shown is size 43.5” / 110.4, modeled with 7” / 18 cm positive ease at the bust. When choosing a size, aim for 2-3” / 5-75. cm positive ease at the hip and 5-8” / 12.5-20.5 cm at the bust.
Yarn
Woolfolk TOV (100% Ovis 21 Merino, 173 yards / 158 meters per 100 grams / 3.5 oz), 8 (9, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13) skeins, or 1300 (1400, 1550, 1675, 1850, 1950, 2150) yards / 1420 (1530, 1695, 1830, 2025, 2135, 2350) meters of heavy worsted or aran weight yarn.
Gauge
24 sts / 24 rows over 4” / 10 cm in cable pattern on largest needle; 20 sts / 24 rows over 4” / 10 cm in stockinette st on largest needle.
Needles
32” / 80 cm or longer circular needle, or long straights, in sizes US 6 / 4 mm, US 7 / 4.5 mm, and US 8 / 5 mm, or size needed to obtain gauge and needles one and two sizes smaller. Note: circular needle is used to accommodate large number of sts. I recommend using a 60” / 152 cm circular needle for the collar to facilitate easy try-ons, but it can be knit on a shorter needle.
