Create your own Filbert with a removable vest and a cute bow tie, bucko!

For this project you’ll need:

Suggested materials:

  • 3 mm crochet hook with light weight yarn (3/DK) in the colours turquoise blue, light orange/coral and any colour of your choice for the bow tie
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook with fine weight yarn (2/Sport) in the colours white and dark blue
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook with medium weight yarn (4/Worsted) in any colour of your choice for the vest
  • A small piece of felt sheet in the colours black, white and pink
  • A small piece of felt sheet in the colour dark blue OR
  • A small piece of dark blue embroidery floss, super fine weight yarn (1/fingering) or fine weight yarn (2/Sport) for the mouth and eyebrows
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Pin needles
  • Stuffing fibre
  • Craft glue
  • Tape measurer

Yarn information:

For this project, I used:

  • Light weight yarn (3/DK) Snuggly Replay 50% cotton / 50% acrylic from Sirdar in the colours Sea Blue Splash (I used about one and a half balls of yarn) and Orange Squashed (just a small piece). My recommendation for substitution of those is the fine weight yarn (2/Sport) Cotton Fair 52% cotton / 48% acrylic from Premier in the colours Turquoise (one ball should be enough) and a small piece of Coral, using the same size hook.
  • Light weight yarn (3/DK) Happy Cotton 100% cotton from Sirdar in red with a 3 mm hook for the bow.
  • Fine weight yarn (2/Sport) Cotton Fair 52% cotton / 48% acrylic from Premier in white with a 2.5 mm hook.
  • Fine weight yarn (2/Sport) Cablé 2005 100% Egyptian mercerized cotton from Sesia in dark blue with a 2.5 mm hook.
  • Medium weight yarn (4/Worsted) Capri 57% cotton / 28% nylon/ 15% polyester from Loops & Threads in the colour Turquoise with a 3.5 mm hook for the vest.

Size:

Approximately 15 cm sitting down. Please have in mind that the actual size of your finished item may change depending on your yarn tension and the materials used. Make sure you adapt the size of the facial features if you use different sizes of hook and yarn.

My abbreviations (based on US terms):

  • INC - increase (2sc in the same st)
  • DEC - decrease (sc 2 together)
  • DC - double crochet
  • HDC - half double crochet
  • BLO - back loops only (do the stitches using only the back loops of your work)
  • FLO - front loops only (do the stitches using only the front loops of your work)
  • ( )xNUMBER - number of times you have to repeat everything inside the brackets|
  • square brackets - total number of stitches on the row
  • Half Colour Change: I used the half-colour change technique on this pattern to give Filbert’s head detail a better finishing. You don’t need to, but I highly recommend learning the method, since it makes a big difference in the final result and, once you get the hang of it, it’s not as complicated as it might seem at first. You can find the tutorial for the technique here: https://youtu.be/hetvd3B0IPY

Tips:

  • If you don’t know how to do one of the crochet stitches used in this pattern you can search on YouTube for “name of the stitch + tutorials” and you’ll find some super easy and detailed video tutorials for beginners.

  • The rows where I don’t mention doing a chain between them are worked in continuous rounds, so it’ll be easier if you use a stitch marker to mark every last stitch from the row.
