This pattern uses Misti Alpaca Chunky, a crazy soft baby alpaca with a spectacular drape. The finished cowl, while densely knitted, will bunch and gather snuggly around your neck. It is narrow and tall, more like a slouchy dickey (ha-ha-ha), and fits great under jackets. Its extended length means you can pull it over your head to add a bit of extra warmth under your coat hood.

Gauge isn’t terribly important with this project - if you know you’re a tight knitter than go up a needle size or two to ensure this cowl maintains its drape. If you only want a charming non-snood-like cowl, then only repeat the chart once rather than the 1.5-ish times I suggest. There is a lot of room for customization -have fun with it!
