A meander is a design formed by a continuous line that’s shaped into a repeated motif. It can be seen as a small labyrinth. If two meander stripes are used in a mirrored arrangement, new lines arise along the edges and square angles to create new figures. Anni Albers (1899–1994) used this effect for her 1970 work titled Yellow Meander.

For this sock pattern, named for Anni Albers, I chose a simple meander that’s symmetrical around a vertical axis. The socks are worked in knit and purl stitches in a single color that makes the socks easy for even beginning knitters. For a completely different look, try mirroring the pattern around a horizontal axis by working Rounds 1–14 of the pattern first, then repeating those rounds in reverse order (Rounds 12–1), followed by Rounds 3–14.

Sizes: About 7½ (8)“ (19 20.5 cm) foot circumference, unstretched, and 9¾ (10½)” (25 26.5 cm) foot length from back of heel to tip of toe (length is adjustable). To fit U.S. women’s shoe sizes 8–9 (men’s 9–10); European shoe sizes 39–41 (42–43).
