These socks are inspired by the book “Silence in the Age of Noise” by Erling Kagge, an explorer who reached both the North and the South pole; but who’s account of his expedition in the Antarctic particularly struck me. He speaks of the silence that he found there and of the silence that is found within all of us if we can just stop and pay attention.

As Kagge tells it: “A great many of us have a desire to return to something basic, authentic, and to find peace, to experience a small, quiet alternative to the din.” May knitting these socks open a small moment in your day for you to listen to the silence within.

Notes:These warm woolen socks are knit without the need to pick up stitches with German Short Rows creating a lovely heel. No need to create a gusset since the stretch inherent in the ribbed pattern provides enough give to pass comfortably over the ankle.
